There are three stages of high blood pressure. 130 to 139 over 80 to 89 is stage one. 140 to 179 over 90 to 119 is stage two. Your doctor may recommend prescription medications. If your blood pressure is more than 180 over 120, you need to talk to your doctor as that is considered crisis-level high blood pressure.

Diet is one of the best ways to get your blood pressure readings under control. You want a low-sodium, balanced diet that limits your intake of alcohol. If you’re overweight, try to lose weight. Losing 10 percent of your body weight is a great start.

If you smoke, stop smoking. You should also engage in daily exercise, and try to blend a mix of activities throughout the week. Walk a few days a week, work with weights a few days a week, and focus on core strength through Tai Chi and Yoga programs.

Finally, lower your stress levels. To do that, you need to have more time to unwind and do things you enjoy. If you’re always busy helping your parents, it’s time to address the need to have others helping you.
