February is Spunky Old Broads Month, created by Dr. Gayle Carson.
The idea behind the holiday is that just because your senior is growing older, that doesn’t mean that she can’t continue to embrace life. Continuing to embrace her inner “spunky old broad” can keep your elderly family member fired up and healthy for a long time to come.
Keep Her Spirits Up
If your elderly family member is finding that her spirits have taken a bit of a beating from growing older, she’s not alone. But that doesn’t mean that has to be her new normal all the time. Find ways to boost your senior’s morale and to help her to realize that she still has a lot of life to live and a lot to give to the world around her.
Address Physical Health Issues
Ignoring physical health issues is a fast way for your senior to dim her inner spunky old broad. If she’s been avoiding her doctor, make an appointment and figure out what she’s up against. Make a plan for keeping your senior as healthy as possible and work on implementing that plan continually.
Help Her to Solve Problems
Growing older comes with a lot of problems at times. Your senior might be trying to figure out how to resolve situations that feel impossible to her to solve on her own and that can take the wind out of her sails a bit. It’s entirely possible that a little bit of help can go a very long way for her. Home care providers are adept at offering help without taking over and robbing your senior of her dignity.
Encourage Her to Do the Things She Loves to Do
When your elderly family member gives up doing the things that she loves to do, she’s at risk of giving up her spot as a spunky old broad. There are caveats, of course, because some of the things she has loved to do might be dangerous. Sure, she may not be able to skydive, but there are other ways to keep doing the things that she loves. Help her to find those ways, as safely as possible.
Talk to your senior about what helps her to keep feeling like a spunky old broad. Doing something as simple as wearing wild colors or dying her hair a brilliant shade can be enough to remind your elderly family member that she truly is that same spunky old broad that she’s always been.
