Lots of people who cope with arthritis find that overnight pain in their joints is much worse than during the day and can keep them awake when they’d rather be sleeping. If this is true for your senior, there may be some steps you can take to help.
Talk to Her Doctor about Her Current Pain Management Plan
One of the first things to do is to look at how your senior and her doctor are currently managing her arthritis pain. What tools are already in place and is your senior following that plan? There may be all sorts of other small changes she can make that may help. Your senior’s doctor can help you to sort through what she has already tried and determine what else is on deck. If your elderly family member didn’t already have a pain management plan, then now is definitely the time for you to put one together.
Take a Look at Your Senior’s Current Daily Schedule
It can help a lot to get an idea of what your senior’s typical day looks like right now, without changing anything. There may be some things that she’s doing that she may not realize are connected to having more pain overnight. Exercising before bed, for instance, might be aggravating joints and firing her body up too much for her to be able to sleep easily. Track what your senior eats and drinks, along with when, because that can offer clues, too. Too much caffeine or foods that cause her to experience more inflammation in her joints than is comfortable late in the day.
Work with Your Senior to Put a Bedtime Routine Together
After you have a bigger picture of what’s going on, you and your aging family member can work together to put a routine together that helps her to ease into sleep. Done correctly, you may be able to do this while helping her to reduce the impact arthritis has on her sleep, too. Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts might be something she finds helpful, for instance. Or having a glass of warm milk with a turmeric blend could help with inflammation pain.
It may also help to determine if your senior is trying to do too much on her own during the day. If that’s the case, then bringing in a caregiver to help out can do a world of good for her
