Independence: How do you know when it’s time for elderly care?

Are there clear signs, or should you look for less noticeable things? Here are four signs that your parents need help from caregivers for them to continue moving forward with their independence.

Elderly Care in Folsom CA: Staying Independent

Elderly Care in Folsom CA: Staying Independent

Your Mom Fell

Twice now, your mom has fallen while getting in and out of the shower. She broke her wrist during this second fall. If she’s having a more challenging time with balance, caregivers should be in the room while she bathes.

She’ll also need help from elderly care aides while her wrist heals. She won’t be able to do some of the things she’s used to doing with two hands, such as carry the hamper to the laundry room or fasten her pants.

Medication Counts Are Off

You just picked up your mom’s refill two weeks ago, and the bottle is already empty. When she can’t remember if she’s taken her medication after getting out of bed, she takes another pill to be sure.

Not only can this lead to an overdose, but her medical insurance company may not want to pay for another refill so soon. It can lead to complications financially and in terms of health.

Another common situation that family caregivers encounter is that the month is up. A prescription refill is ready, but you discover your mom still has half a bottle of last month’s pills. She forgets to take them, which can cause her health to worsen. Medication reminders ensure she takes her medications correctly.

The House Is Messy and Cluttered

Your parents’ house is full of clutter. Mail from three weeks ago is stacked on the stairs and hasn’t been touched. Dishes are sitting on the counter and attracting ants. Pet hair is everywhere, including all over the clean cutlery in the drawer.

If your parents find it too hard to change their sheets, run the vacuum, or sweep the floor, it’s a problem. Caregivers can help with light housekeeping.

Independence: Multiple Car Accidents Have Occurred

Your dad is at the store and goes to the park. He accidentally hits the gas pedal instead of the brake. While he’s fine, he caused a lot of damage to the building. This is the second time he’s been in an accident this month. It may be time to discuss taking his keys.

Your parents should not look at elderly care services as a loss of independence. The services are designed to help your parents remain independent by providing the needed support levels with daily activities. Make sure they know that elderly care aides only help them out with the things they can’t do alone.
